Here is an email I sent to Dennis Eveland
Dennis,
Your "Generations" marching show is $1,200.
Which translates into $400 a song
Yet I can buy just "Fanfare for a new Generation" from Grand Mesa Music for $50.
If I were a band director, I could get my percussion instructor (or someone I know) to write percussion parts.
Are percussion parts worth $350?
What I really mean is why the high prices for a show when I can pick and choose from concert selections.
Thanks
Roel

Answer to e-mail
Good question Roel,
First of all, you would have to pay copyright fee ($300 for just one song), then pay your percussion arranger, and your fee. Remember, both Eric and I are trying to charge for also our time. If you look at the prices offered by Key Poulan, John Meehan, etc., we are actually cheaper. For both percussion/ wind parts, we are very reasonable, plus
the director doesn't have to do any of the work.
In my opinion, the percussion parts that Eric writes are worth $350.00. I, for one, couldn't write as well as he does. He not only writes the battery, but listen carefully, and you'll note he puts in much much
more. Plus, we pay for advertising and get these works copyrighted. To charge that much is very fair.
Finally, yes you can pick and choose concert pieces and arrange, but to
do it legally you would need to get permission which can run anywhere from $300 on up for just one tune. If you do it illegally and get caught, the fines would be substantial.
